Der Ökumenische Rat der Kirchen (Weltkirchenrat/World Council of Churches) wurde mit einem edlen Ziel gegründet: die Spaltung der Christenheit zu überwinden und die Einheit der ursprünglichen Jünger Christi wiederherzustellen. Nachdem sein Gründungsgeist Willem Visser ‚t Hooft in den Ruhestand gegangen war, driftete er vom ursprünglichen Anliegen weg, was sich nach dessen Tod im Jahr 1985 noch beschleunigte.
